On a boat going across the lake, retired agent Julia meets the young girl Miranda who is coming to stay with her mother for the summer. Julia is returning to her yellow limestone house for what she knows is her last summer. The house has been a safe haven for her between her travels and her one constant in a life without ties, weaknesses, love or close relationships.

The meeting on the boat marks the beginning of a friendship that is to become important for both Julia and Miranda. It helps Julia to come to terms with her life drawing to an end, but it also awakens memories.
