Håkan Lindquist

In Another Country

(I ett annat land)

“Did they keep you as a prisoner? But you are only ... a child. Almost a child”. Aleks opened his eyes. The summer sun was broiling in the farmyard and the fields. He felt the heat against his skin. It hurt to see Lisa’s horrified face. The contrasts are too big, he thought. The contrasts between all the beautiful things around him and the horrible things that he had experienced. How would he ever find harmony between these two extremes. “Those are evil men, he explained. They don’t care. For them it doesn’t matter if you are a child, a grown up or very old. “

Aleks has escaped with his family from a war stricken European country. They live in a refugee centre in the idyllic countryside of Sweden waiting for their permanent residence permit. Aleks is tormented by horrible memories from the war. His best friend Soran was brutally killed in front of his eyes. And he had to kill his beloved dog Mir with his own hands, after the dog was badly injured by one of his torturers.

How will this young boy manage to survive and find his way back to life again – a life where he can be true to himself and to those who care?

"This is incredibly skillful […] This is a book that raises many political and ethical questions but it also shows that the arts of storytelling, of listening and even of reading are ruled by ethics. That is big. Bigger than you would think."
Svenska Dagbladet

"Lindquist’s book is both touching and absorbing."   BTJ
